Retaining wall blocks creates an artistic definition and segregated texture to any landscape or garden. The more beautiful and appropriate to the scene the materials and design of the retaining wall, the higher the quality of ambiance is added to your landscape design. The construction of a segmental retaining wall is quite different from that of a traditional masonry wall. For a segmental wall, we dig a wide, shallow footer and fill it with compacted aggregate. We level the base then immediately start laying the block. Pins are used to align the blocks. Some blocks include tabs or notches formed right into the block. At certain intervals, we place a product called geogrid between courses of block and extend out behind the wall. Then, we backfill with clean gravel immediately behind the wall, and often finish the wall with a cap. Segmental retaining walls will move with the slight expansion and contraction of the soil due to freeze and thaw. This design advantage results in an extremely durable wall system. Another advantage of segmental retaining walls is fast construction time. As mentioned above, segmental walls come in a variety of styles and sizes.

Natural Stone Boulders

Boulders provide a beautiful natural look with the functionality necessary for an effective retaining wall. The advantage of using boulders is that they are both decorative and incredibly strong. Boulders do not suffer from weathering or erosion when temperatures change. Properly installed boulder walls are very long-lasting and safe.
Boulders can be used to terrace a yard into different levels, provide erosion control, or create raised beds. They can also define the slopes at a walk-out for a new home or addition, driveway entrances, or as a backdrop for business signage. Terracing slopes divide the land into functional areas where flowering plants or lawns can be grown. These large rocks give the feeling of strength and sturdiness and are a very natural solution to a change in grade. Retaining wall construction can be a bit of a challenge for the homeowner to install. Rocks are very dense and heavy and large boulders require mechanical equipment to lift the stone into place. The process of selecting the right stone out of the pile can be a very time-consuming part of constructing the wall. The stones must fit together well, like a jigsaw puzzle, with the majority of the weight on the stone below, not the soil behind it. Due to the weight and shape of the rocks, no mortar is required when constructing a sturdy wall. A major advantage of boulder retaining walls is that they offer natural drainage. When residential retaining walls fail, it is most often due to poor drainage. Using boulders ensures that excess water can drain through the wall.
Boulders come in a variety of sizes. It is important that the right size is used for both the look and functionality. The wall height usually determines the size boulder that is needed.  In most cases, any retaining wall over four feet needs to be overseen by a civil engineer to ensure stability and safety. We have several suppliers of rocks and stones, with a wide range of colors and shapes to choose from.

The Four Benefits of Retaining Walls

If your landscape features sharp gradient changes, a retaining wall is a feature worth integrating. In addition to providing essential structural support to large masses of soil, a thoughtfully designed retaining wall can be an attractive focal point for your backyard. Retaining walls also have a number of other benefits that can help transform your landscape into a functional and striking masterpiece.

Preventing Soil Erosion and Providing Flood Control

Erosion is ever prevalent in any landscape, whether it is due to wind or water. This makes retaining walls all the more important, especially if your landscape does not feature a lot of trees and shrubs to hold the soil in place. In addition to providing necessary support to the soil, retaining walls also help reduce the surface runoff by reducing sharper gradients. This reduces the speed at which water travels over the surface and thereby reduces erosion.

Retaining walls do all this while also providing effective flood control in the form of water drainage aimed at preventing flooding. Channels and drainage pipes can be integrated into the construction to provide further measures for proper drainage and water control. Lastly, retaining walls also reduce the gradient through terracing which allows water to soak into the soil rather than run off the surface.

Structural Support

A retaining wall serves to keep soil in place. This mostly applies to landscapes featuring small hills where these walls act as a necessary barrier to prevent the soil from sliding forward in a landslide. This makes a retaining wall a necessary safety feature for your landscape, ensuring your wellbeing as well as the well-being of your house and the features in your yard. Depending on the amount of support required, there are a range of options to pick from.

Adding Functional Space to Your Yard

Retaining walls can prove to be bold and attractive structures depending on their height and the material used. The contrast of a concrete or stone structure alongside a natural landscape can work wonders for a landscape. A retaining wall can also double as a seating wall if designed at the right height making it even more functional. With the wide variety of materials available your retaining wall can flow naturally with other features in your yard for a beautiful end result.
